At SMILE we are so aware that children’s self-esteem is so fragile, especially so with the complex emotional issues surrounding a family breakdown or loss of a parent through bereavement. If a child does not feel good about themselves then all aspects of life become difficult, including school. We have the priviledge to be working with Longfleet School to develop courses that help boost their self-image and help the girls to feel good about themselves.

As part of St Mary’s Longfleet Church Hope Weekend, we ran Sparkle* for teenage girls. This was a 2 hour session consisting of Sparkle* Corner with an interactive presentation to help the girls’s self-esteem. During the session we looked at our uniqueness, and how we are all beautiful on the inside and out. The girls also shredded negative thoughts they had about themselves and looked at their positive attributes. We also ran a Sparkle* Parlour giving the girls an opportunity to be pampered with a manicure, foot spa and facial massage.

We’re currently developing this for younger girls and are just about to launch Sparkle Gems* for girls in school Years 2 and 3. Courses for Years 4 and 5 are anticipated in the Spring, with another Teen Sparkle* in the Summer.

Eventually it is planned to develop a course for boys.

The courses are open to any child who is struggling with their self-worth, whether from a lone parent family or not.

If you would like to work with SMILE to develop Sparkle* and the boys course, either by giving your time and skills or by donating pampering gifts, please contact Alix Digby by email or through the Faithworks Wessex office on 01202 429037.
